President John Mahama has stated his willingness to make British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua a Ghanaian citizen.
The Ghanaian president also appointed Anthony Joshua as a continental boxing ambassador, demonstrating cultural solidarity and sporting diplomacy.
Joshua made the offer during a courtesy visit to the Jubilee House in Accra.
Joshua was welcomed by President Mahama, Ghanaian boxing icon Azumah Nelson, Sports Minister Kofi Adams, and other dignitaries.

President Mahama, visibly moved by Joshua’s presence and international significance, lauded the former unified world heavyweight champion for his global accomplishments and cultural effect.
“If you want a Ghanaian passport, we will give it to you,” Mahama vowed, prompting applause from the audience. “He’ll be our ambassador. We need people like him to help transform the lives of young people. We hope he will become an advocate for boxing in Africa and champion this cause.
The president suggested that Joshua’s participation may encourage a new generation of African fighters. “He paved the way for future boxers to make Africa proud and impact their respective societies.” “You are a beloved icon in Ghana,” Mahama added.
Joshua’s tour to Ghana, which began on Friday, June 13, has included outreach activities, training sessions, and media appearances.
However, his tour sparked new debate regarding Nigeria’s long-standing cultural rivalry with Ghana.
In a candid moment at Jubilee House, Joshua acknowledged that Ghana had not previously been on his tour itinerary, thanks in part to prejudiced narratives he had met in Nigeria.
“Coming to Ghana wasn’t on my agenda,” Joshua explained. “Because, for some reason, everyone in Nigeria prefers Nigeria over Ghana. But now that I’m here, I’m gazing about as if they’ve lied to me.”
His amusing admission elicited laughs and applause, emphasizing the lighthearted but traditional rivalry between the two West African states.
Joshua went on to express his tremendous respect for Ghana’s infrastructure, hospitality, and cultural diversity.
“I’m impressed with your beautiful country, amazing culture, hospitality, the airport, the organisation, and I can’t wait to go back and tell everyone across the world how beautiful this place is,” added the traveler.
