Abimbola Olawunmi, an All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the next Ekiti State governorship race, has asserted that the party is forcing Biodun Oyebanji, the current governor, on the state.
Olawunmi made the charge on Wednesday while speaking on Arise Television.
He was adamant about not endorsing the current governor’s candidacy.
“I would have backed Gov. Oyebanji if the selection process for the APC’s 2027 candidate had been fair. I am unable to endorse the process, though, because it is essentially faulty.
“Ekiti State residents have made it obvious that they will not support him in the next election for governor.
“How does he expect to win the general election if he lacked the confidence to contest fairly in the primaries?” he inquired.
According to reports, Oyebanji was confirmed by the APC on Monday as the party’s consensus choice for the state’s 2026 governorship.
The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Stephen Aribasoye, seconded the motion for affirmation, which was made in Ado-Ekiti by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.
The governor’s “giant strides in various sectors which have benefitted the people of Ekiti” were reflected in the decision, according to Ahmed Ododo, the chairman of the Affirmation Congress Committee, who spoke during the process.
He continued by saying that the APC was still a disciplined party that the public trusted because of Oyebanji’s leadership.
