The All Progressives Congress (APC) Lagos State Chapter has rejected a claim made by former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola that the 2027 election will not be determined by governors defecting to the party.
Oladejo Seye, the party’s spokesperson, claimed in a statement that the speech was intended to promote the opposition’s academic win in the 2023 Lagos presidential elections.
The APC maintained that it was essential to document the facts and rectify the broad conclusions and convenient omissions that were present in Aregbesola’s statements.
“First, it is intellectually disingenuous to isolate Lagos from the broader national picture,” the statement says. In the 2023 presidential election, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu won by earning the mandate of Nigerians in various areas, forming the largest national coalition, and winning the constitutional spread.
Even though they are symbolic, presidential elections are won at the national level rather than on the basis of a single state. To imply otherwise is either a willful attempt to deceive or a lack of understanding of electoral realities.
Second, Mr. Aregbesola finds it convenient to overlook the fact that the alleged opposition “victory” in Lagos during the presidential election was, at best, fleeting. It didn’t last past that one election and didn’t change the national result. Days later, the APC was re-elected to the governorship, demonstrating Lagosians’ faith in the progressive tradition and the party.
Even more instructive, the APC won large victory in later off-season bye-elections held throughout the state. This was an undeniable sign of the progressive party’s long-term dominance, organization, and popularity in Lagos.
Third, the results of the Lagos presidential election strengthened President Tinubu’s democratic credentials rather than weakening his status. They remain unquestionable evidence of his devotion to and belief in a legitimate election process.
