The All Progressives Congress (APC) chapter in Lagos State has encouraged former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi to give up on any intentions to run for president in 2027, claiming that his political clout has crumbled.
According to reports, the party made the statement on Sunday in response to Obi’s failure to deliver his Labour Party polling unit during the Anambra governorship election.
Obi’s legitimacy as a national candidate was ridiculed by APC Lagos spokesperson Seye Oladejo, who asked how he plans to govern Nigeria when he “cannot command loyalty in his own neighborhood.”
Obi’s defeat at his polling place, according to Oladejo’s sharply worded statement, is indicative of a broader collapse of the political momentum he rode on during the 2023 elections.
“A man has no right to dream of winning a country if he can’t win his polling unit.” A man cannot claim national acceptance if he is rejected on his street. He declared, “A man whose strongest base has collapsed cannot sell the lie of a national movement.”
The loss signified “the complete disintegration of the myth around Peter Obi,” according to Oladejo.
APC: “We Hope He Won’t Run Abroad to Beg Again”
“We sincerely hope Mr. Obi will not run to beg for foreign intervention to rescue him from this political free fall, as he has unashamedly attempted in recent times,” the party said, accusing Obi of seeking foreign intervention following domestic failures. Nigeria’s democracy is not a toy for desperate politicians who have been rejected at home and are looking for sympathy overseas.
Obi is “granting contradictory interviews and hiding behind hashtags that collapse at the ballot box,” according to Oladejo, who contrasted Obi with President Bola Tinubu, who is consolidating administration.
“Peter Obi is busy seeking international validation, while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is rebuilding institutions, fixing the economy, expanding infrastructure, attracting foreign investments, and restoring global confidence,” he continued.
Oladejo emphasized that Nigerians won’t trust someone who doesn’t have the support of his own base with their future.
“Peter Obi should forget about 2027 if he cannot command confidence in his polling unit.” He declared, “Nigerians will not entrust their future to a man whose own people have publicly lost faith in him.”
The APC’s victory in Obi’s polling unit, he continued, was “symbolic, conclusive, and prophetic,” reflecting “the national mood.”
The Lagos APC counseled Obi to deal with the problems inside his party base before portraying himself as a national fixer, saying, “Performance is triumphing over propaganda; structure is defeating chaos; delivery is destroying deception.”
“Peter Obi ought to spare the country more drama. Before he pretends to fix Nigeria, let him first mend the political harm at his doorstep, Oladejo added.
According to reports, the comments heighten political tensions as parties and other interested parties prepare for the general election in 2027.
