President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of former presidential spokesman Reno Omokri for the position of ambassador has drawn criticism from the Labour Party’s (LP) factional National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi.
Arabambi contended that Omokri should not have been appointed because of his history of vocal criticism of the president, even though all other ambassadorial applicants were worthy of their posts.
Arabambi stated in an interview with Arise News that President Tinubu has the authority and right to propose people for ambassadorial positions under the Nigerian Constitution.
He did stress, though, that the Senate must confirm the appointments before they become operative.
“Now that the president has the authority to designate his ambassadors, they would go before the Senate and their resumes would be presented to the Senate for approval,” stated Arabambi.
“I think the Senate, led by Akpabio, would undoubtedly do justice. Recall that several of them were returned after being nominated as ministers.
You are not the court, therefore regardless of the political hirakiri being created by forces denouncing some of the ambassadorial nominees, someone was arguing that they should be imprisoned.
Since they would often require them to stand on the stage and present their résumé to Nigerians, I believe they should let the Senate carry out its duties, and we should all observe.
“I think everyone was nominated, with the exception of Reno, who I thought the president shouldn’t have taken into consideration.
“Reno Omokri is qualified, but his past criticism of the president may work against him.”
