The Good Governance Rating Index (GGRI) midterm report highlighted Zamfara State, led by Governor Dauda Lawal, as Nigeria’s most egregious governance failure from 2023 to 2025, and the Arewa Youth Council for Peace (AYCP) has fully supported this assessment.

Lawal’s administration was ranked last in terms of infrastructure, security, health, education, and transparency in the UK-based organization’s damning evaluation, which revealed it to be a disastrous betrayal of the people of Zamfara.

This report is described by the AYCP as a “long-overdue indictment of a governor who has turned Zamfara into a living nightmare.”

According to the GGRI report, despite billions being embezzled as security votes, armed banditry and mass kidnappings have increased in Zamfara under Lawal’s leadership.

Due to a lack of funding, health facilities in Zamfara have turned into a death trap for mothers and babies, with maternal mortality rates among the highest in Nigeria. Additionally, more than 60% of rural children are denied an education and grow up in dilapidated schools.

Lawal is charged in the study with wasting public trust on a quagmire of political favoritism, corruption, and a lack of development vision, resulting in impassable roads, unpaid laborers, and a sharp rise in poverty.

AYCP denounced Lawal’s leadership as a “monumental disgrace” in a statement signed by Comrade Usman Yusuf, pointing out that his 2023 campaign pledges of security and prosperity were nothing more than deceptive rhetoric.

Audits, citizen feedback, and field surveys support the GGRI’s findings, which show a state in freefall where public funds disappear into the governor’s patronage networks and government agents collude to exacerbate insecurity.

With Zamfara’s suffering threatening to destabilize the entire North-West, the AYCP states that this governance collapse is a ticking time bomb for Nigeria’s stability.

Furthermore, Yusuf stated: “Dauda Lawal is a disaster in human form, a governor who has robbed Zamfara of its dreams and abandoned its citizens to drown in poverty and violence.”

“He needs to get down on his knees, ask for forgiveness, and step down right away for sending our state into this pit of despair.” The fact that bandits control our territories, children beg rather than learn, and mothers pass away needlessly as a result of his failure and greed is a stain on Zamfara’s soul.

“The youth of Zamfara will be furious with Lawal when the elections take place in 2027. We shall ensure that he is recognized as the perpetrator of our misery by dragging his name through the muck of his own creation.

“The GGRI report is our rallying cry—we will relentlessly pursue Lawal’s removal from office for his crimes against our people, and his days are numbered.”

The public is even more incensed now that the GGRI investigations have exposed the secrecy surrounding security budgets and the lack of responsibility for funding intended to prevent banditry.

People are accusing Lawal of transforming Zamfara into a “bandit’s paradise” while regular families live in fear over reports of government officers working together with criminals.

In addition to being a failing governor, Dauda Lawal is a coward who steals Zamfara’s hopes and hides behind hollow promises while our people suffer, the president of the AYCP declared.

It is imperative that he resigns immediately or face expulsion in shame. His shame is evident in every parent who dies, every school that collapses, and every child that is abducted.

“We will see to it that Zamfara dismisses him in 2027, burying his political career beneath the debris of his own shortcomings.”

“We call for accountability, justice, and transparency. Lawal will have to face the verdict of the people; no amount of political scheming will be able to protect him from the impending storm.

“We support every Zamfaran who is under oppression at the hands of Lawal. His deception has been exposed by the GGRI report, and we will mobilize our citizens to demand justice.

We will battle from Gusau to the tiniest village until Lawal is defeated, his associates are exposed, and Zamfara is released from his shackle. Our commitment is that we will rise after Lawal falls.
