Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has issued a warning: the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is a privilege that should not be misused. He emphasizes that it is not an unalienable right and that its holders may lose it if they fail to meet expectations.
The remarks were reportedly made by Fagbemi on Saturday in Lagos during a dinner hosted by the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN) to mark the distinguished rank’s 50th anniversary.
Kamarudeen Ogundele, Special Adviser to the President (Communication and Publicity) in the Office of the AGF and Minister of Justice, made his remarks in a statement released on Sunday.
Under the false impression that the rank is unalienable once it is granted, some of us seem to view it as a license for misbehavior and lack of discipline, Fagbemi stated. Of course, that’s not true.
“As with all privileges, the rank can be revoked if the recipient denigrates the privilege or lives below its standards.”
The AGF restated that the SAN title was not permanent and might be revoked from recipients who erred, as stated by the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC).
Fagbemi, who also serves as BOSAN’s chair, advocated for internal body discipline as opposed to merely depending on external regulatory systems.
“We must begin enforcing discipline within, starting with our bodies. The LPPC or, worse, the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) should not be given full responsibility for policing the rank; it is actually preferable for us as a body to self-regulate,” he stated.
In addition, he admonished Senior Advocates to maintain high ethical standards while warning junior attorneys not to treat SANs disrespectfully.
During the banquet, 134 new SANs were formally inducted into BOSAN, including 87 from the 2024 set and 57 from the 2025 set.
The occasion also included the awarding of scholarships to five legal students from Nigerian universities.
The special guest of honor, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, was also commended by Fagbemi. He pointed out that the continued cooperation between the LPPC and BOSAN has greatly strengthened the SAN rank and the legal profession in general.
