Following a gasoline tanker fire incident in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of the state, which resulted in multiple injuries, the Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of its citizens.

In a statement signed and released on Saturday by Ebojele Akhere Patrick, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the state administration revealed that a powerful delegation had been sent to the affected community and hospitals where victims are being treated.

On Governor Monday Okpebholo’s orders, the delegation, headed by the governor’s chief of staff, Mallam Gani Audu, visited the location of the fire as well as Auchi General Hospital and Amazing Grace Hospital, where casualties were admitted.

According to Audu, the governor ordered the team to go to Auchi right away in order to express sympathy to the locals and perform a quick evaluation of the situation.

“When we learned about this incident on December 17, the governor gave us a clear mandate to come to Auchi immediately to show solidarity and sympathy with the Auchi community and the victims,” he stated.

“On His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo’s order, we are here to determine precisely what transpired.”

The governor would have visited the region in person, but the Chief of Staff clarified that he was inevitably involved in state affairs in Abuja.

He claims that a strong delegation’s structure emphasizes how responsive the government is.

“You can see that this is a responsible and responsive government that cares about the people when you have the Chief of Staff, the Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, the Chief Whip of the Edo State House of Assembly, the Director-General of EdoSEMA, and NEMA officials,” Audu continued.

He stated that the delegation had collected first-hand information from the hospitals and the scene and promised to provide the governor with a comprehensive report that would direct long-term preventive actions.

“We are grateful that no one died. We will report back to the governor with first-hand knowledge so that steps can be taken to stop similar incidents in the future,” he stated.

Auchi does not currently have a working fire station, according to the Director-General of the Edo State Fire Service, who stated that the government was already taking action to rectify this issue.

Auchi will get a fire station with fire trucks by January of next year, the governor has already promised. He said, “This is a densely populated business area that should have a fire station.”

According to Hon. Festus Ebea, Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, the Auchi–Okene expressway connecting Jattu Junction is in bad condition, which contributed to the event.

This route is hazardous due to its undulating terrain. We must take immediate corrective action to prevent similar incidents in the future. Several trailers have missed their way here, according to historical archives,” he stated.

Ebea promised that the state administration would handle victims who were still undergoing treatment.

Additionally, the commissioner cautioned locals not to scavenge fuel off downed tankers, calling the practice exceedingly risky.

PMS is quite combustible. If you see fuel streaming, flee quickly. A small static force can start a fire. He warned everyone, “This is strong advice.”

Twenty-five people were impacted by the incident, according to Jerry Idahosa, Head of the Edo State Emergency Management Agency.

According to him, Auchi General Hospital and Amazing Grace Hospital were still treating sixteen of the victims.

“Four trucks were impacted, a few motorbikes were also burned, and some stores were destroyed,” Idahosa continued.

Hon. Hussein Mustafa Lecky, the Chief Whip of the Edo State House of Assembly, expressed sympathy for the residents of his district and urged the federal and state governments to immediately repair the Auchi-Okene road.

Jattu Junction, according to him, is a vital point of entrance for numerous Etsako settlements.

In a similar vein, the chairman of Etsako West Local Government Area expressed gratitude to the governor for his prompt action, citing a prior instance in which victims received compensation.

The government has been present since the day of this tragedy. This time, I think His Excellency would also look after the impacted people,” he stated.

Speaking from their hospital beds, victims and witnesses described their experiences, and National Emergency Management Agency representatives were also present for the evaluation.
