Datti Baba-Ahmed, a former Labour Party (LP) vice presidential candidate, denied widespread reports that former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi had left the party on Friday.
Following the party’s National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, which was attended by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Baba-Ahmed addressed journalists.
Reports claiming that Obi had left the LP were criticized by the senior party figure, who said the allegation lacked standing.
As far as we are aware, our brother, His Excellency Peter Obi, is still a Labour Party member. Nothing has evolved. “I would have moved my seat to the left for him if he were here right now,” he remarked.
The former vice presidential candidate praised INEC’s contribution and described its presence as a symbolic victory for the legitimacy of the party.
“The presence of INEC, which validates this sitting and justifies our presence here, is the highlight and major turning point of this NEC meeting,” he declared.
“We adhere completely to the provisions of the law. He emphasized procedural compliance and continued, “As law-abiding citizens, we strictly follow what the law provides.”
“The Labour Party has not diminished in any way,” stated Baba-Ahmed. Our numbers have just grown.
He clarified that “we have gone through rough times, as is usual with political associations, and have emerged from it,” characterizing the NEC meeting as a revitalized effort to promote unity.
According to Baba-Ahmed, Nigeria’s political decisions have been a major factor in the country’s current crises and rising insecurity.

He cited recent security lapses, claiming that an LP-led government would have prevented them.
“Nigerians voted for change in large numbers, but something else happened,” stated Baba-Ahmed. As a result, we witnessed hundreds of school kidnappings and the public killing of top army leaders two days ago.
“These would never have occurred if the Nigerian government had been formed by the Labour Party.”
Speaking on worker welfare, Baba-Ahmed stated that the LP is still committed to fair labor standards.
“It is the Labour Party’s birthright to guarantee fair and realistic living wages for all workers; this will play a key role from now till 2027 and beyond,” he declared.
Months after the contentious 2024 Labour Party national convention in Nnewi, which caused a leadership split between opposing camps involving prominent party figures, the NEC meeting on Friday is presided over by factional National Chairman Julius Abure.
