The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in Bauchi State has cautioned the newly inaugurated local government chairpersons to prioritize transparency and accountability in their financial dealings.
The party expressed concerns about the manner in which the chairpersons came to power, stating that the elections were marred by massive rigging and irregularities.
“We urge them to prioritize transparency and accountability in their financial dealings,” said Hon. Abdulazeez Haruna, State Secretary of the PRP. “They must not surrender their local government grants and monies to the state government or any individual, regardless of their position or influence.”
The PRP reminded the chairpersons that a Supreme Court judgement had granted full autonomy, including financial autonomy, to local governments. “They have no reason to be beholden to anyone or act as stooges by handing over their local government funds,” Haruna said.

The party warned the chairpersons not to succumb to any pressure or temptation to embezzle or misappropriate funds meant for the development of their local government areas.
“We will be monitoring their actions closely and will not hesitate to take necessary steps to ensure that they uphold their responsibilities and account for their actions,” Haruna said.
The PRP urged the chairpersons to prioritize the needs of their constituents and work towards delivering the dividends of democracy. “They must remember that they will be accountable for their actions before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the people of their local government areas, and ultimately before God,” Haruna said.
The party’s warning comes as the newly inaugurated chairpersons are set to assume office amidst concerns about their legitimacy and ability to deliver good governance. The PRP’s caution is seen as a timely reminder to the chairpersons to prioritize the interests of their constituents and uphold the principles of transparency and accountability.
