Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, the governor of Benue State, has announced a N16.8 billion fertilizer scheme that will create hundreds of billionaire farmers in the next two years and reestablish the state as Nigeria’s agricultural powerhouse.
At Makurdi’s official 2025 planting season kickoff and subsidized farm input distribution, Governor Alia declared that farmers will get 9,000 metric tonnes (600 truckloads) of fertilizer NPK, urea, and SSP at half the market price. Each bag would cost farmers N22,500, with the government providing a subsidy to cover the remaining amount.
“The state has also finalized plans to settle over ₦5 billion owed to genuine fertilizer suppliers from the previous year,” the governor stated, emphasizing that delays were caused by fraudulent acts by some vendors in 2024.

According to him, Benue has implemented a new agricultural calendar that guarantees the timely distribution of wet season inputs between April and June and dry season inputs between November and January.
Governor Alia further promised that starting in December, no raw oranges will be shipped from the state since Benue’s new fruit processing facility would improve the local product.
Along with ordering the delivery of 300 bags of fertilizer to widows in attendance, he also ordered farmer cooperatives to make sure the distribution was transparent.
The government has implemented cashless fertilizer purchases through POS terminals at approved sites in an effort to eradicate corruption, according to Agriculture Commissioner Dr. Benjamin Ashaver.
In order to improve openness and fill in the gaps in extension services, he added, a reliable farmers’ registration and hybrid digital platform were being created.
The CEO of Star Fertilizer, Dr. Julius Atorough, gave farmers the assurance that contaminated fertilizer would be eradicated because his company had brought back the dormant Benue Fertilizer Plant to make fertilizers tailored to the state’s crops.
Both the Ter Lobi, HRH Moses Anagende, and Hon. Emmanuel Shimawua, the Chairman of the Agriculture Committee of the Benue State House of Assembly, praised the initiative, calling it timely assistance that would increase output and rebuild farmers’ trust in rural security.
The event included cultural exhibits, music, and a ribbon-cutting.
