The Labour Party (LP) condemned the recent mass murders in Benue State and called for the rapid deployment of security troops to protect vulnerable populations across Nigeria’s North Central region.
The party described the assaults as “a new wave of senseless violence,” and warned that Nigeria could not continue on this path.
Senator Nenadi Usman, the party’s National Caretaker Committee Chairman, issued a statement on Monday calling for a thorough inquiry and speedy prosecution of the culprits, regardless of their status or connections.
Usman expressed tremendous regret over the deaths of over 100 people, including women, children, displaced persons, and security officers, as well as the destruction of homes and livelihoods.
“These were not just numbers. They were human beings whose innocent lives were mercilessly cut short.
“Children that deserved protection were killed. Mothers who were supposed to be nurturing families were buried in mass graves. Fathers who attempted to defend their houses were executed without mercy,” she stated.
The Labour Party leader expressed sadness at the continuous violence, citing the burning of homes, attacks on security officers, and ongoing assaults on displaced people as clear signs of the government’s unwillingness to protect its citizens.
“The bloodshed in Benue should shake every conscience.
“This is a national disgrace, not just a localized one. The assailants’ boldness and the victims’ vulnerability reflect a worrying lack of leadership and accountability,” Usman added.
In addition to military involvement, Usman urged for a coordinated humanitarian response that included food, shelter, medical help, and psychological support for those affected.
She advised Nigerians to go beyond “routine condemnations” and insist on concrete actions, emphasizing that silence and apathy only support those who commit acts of violence.
“To the bereaved families, I mourn with you as a mother.
“The cries of orphaned children, widowed women, and shattered communities have been heard. “Your pain is felt across the country, and your call for justice must not be ignored,” she added.
She reiterated the Labour Party’s commitment to advocating for policies that prioritize the safety and dignity of all Nigerians, particularly those living in rural and conflict-affected areas.
“Nigeria cannot continue like this,” Usman remarked.
