In the Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia State, some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have reportedly defected to the Labour Party (LP), supporting Governor Alex Otti’s bid for a second term in office.
The defectors were believed to include, among other prominent local politicians, former Abia State House of Assembly Majority Leader Hon. Paul Taribo of the APC, former Commissioner and former Chairman of the Ukwa East Transition Committee Hon. Ossy Nwamuo, two-time Commissioner for Women Affairs Lady Chinedu Brown, and Ukwa East State Constituency Representative Hon. Lewis Obianyi.
The endorsement was made on Thursday at the Ohanku community, where locals and political figures came together in what they called a unanimous decision to support the governor regardless of party.
Alex Otti welcomed the defectors and thanked them for their support and endorsement in the 2027 election for governor.
He took the opportunity to fix long-standing infrastructural issues, especially electricity, which locals claimed had been unavailable throughout the Ndoki territory for more than 20 years.
“We are forced to grant you authority if we are able to grant authority not only to Ukwa West but also to Etche, which is not a part of Abia State,” Otti stated.

The Commissioner for Works was instructed by the governor to finish the remaining portion of Ohanku Road and extend it into the village.
Additionally, he gave locals the assurance that Obohia village in Ukwa East LGA will be included in the capital-intensive rehabilitation of Obohia Road. He said that attention would also be given to the internal roads that Senator Adolphus Wabara had demanded.
In order to guarantee enduring peace in the region, Otti revealed that talks had been held with his colleague from Akwa Ibom State regarding ongoing border conflicts, especially in Akirika Obu.
In response to requests for the resuscitation of Abia palm, the governor disclosed that his administration had inked a Memorandum of Understanding with a foreign company that produces and processes palm.
Otti also said that his government has finished renovating and upgrading eleven primary healthcare facilities in Ukwa East, four of which are currently functioning and the rest of which should be open in 45 days.
Additionally, he gave the Ukwa East Mayor instructions to perform palliative repairs on the roofs of school buildings at the event site, pledging a full restoration at a later time.
Otti Refuses the Title of Chieftain
Otti requested that the Ukwa East Traditional Rulers Council postpone granting him a chieftaincy title until after his tenure in 2031, a move that was met with enthusiasm.
“I do not think public office holders should be honored while they are still in office,” he said.
Adolphus Wabara, the former president of the Senate, and other prominent figures, such as Lewis Obianyi, Uzoma Nkem Abonta, Ambassador Okey Emuche, and Lady Chinedu Brown, characterized the endorsement as a collective choice of the Ukwa people.
They emphasized that the action was a group decision to back a governor who, in their opinion, had done a credible job rather than just being partisan.
Hon. Lewis Obianyi seconded Wabara’s formal resolution recommending Otti for a second term, and the audience unanimously approved it.
The governor’s efforts to renovate primary healthcare facilities, rehabilitate schools, and launch the construction of Ukwa East’s first general hospital were praised by the leaders.
But they implored him to give the restoration of electricity, the revitalization of Abia Palm, the extension of road projects from Aba to Ukwa East, and the peacemaking in Akirika Obu first priority.
Eze Ikeagwuchi Ekeke, speaking on behalf of the Asa community, and Hon. Chibunna Akara, the Mayor of Ukwa East LGA, also praised what they called Otti’s accomplishments in the region while highlighting other developmental issues.
Traditional leaders prayed for the governor and gave him presents, while Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, and other dignitaries attended.
