Matthew Kukah, the bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, has expressed concern about what he called “relentless daily killings” in Nigeria.
According to reports, the cleric issued a warning about the violence’s unprecedented scope and pattern.
Kukah gave a speech at Yola, Adamawa State, when Solomon Kumangar, the former Director-General of Media and Communication, gave Governor Ahmadu Fintiri a book titled The Man They Could Not Stop.
Nigeria has grown dangerously divided along religious lines, according to Kukah, who bemoaned the frequency of killings throughout the nation.
Kukah stated, “What is occurring in Nigeria cannot occur in Sudan, Cameroon, Niger, Ghana, or any other nation in the world.”
“No other nation in the world has weekly killings of ten people on Monday, fifty on Tuesday, and one hundred on Wednesday. How can such a nation progress?
“Religious identities have become the lens through which violence is reported and understood more and more,” he continued.
Christians and Muslims only perish in Nigeria. The massacres along religious lines—20 Christians killed, 30 Muslims slaughtered—are being encouraged by the Western media.
Kukah called for religious and political leaders to put aside sectarian differences and create organizations that advance harmony, peace, and the advancement of the country.
The cleric also praised Attahiru Jega, the former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, for his intervention during the Adamawa governorship election crisis in 2023, calling it crucial to bringing the situation under control.
Former Senate President and former Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki also spoke at the occasion and urged Nigerians to put leadership and competency above party allegiance.
“Only when the right people are given the opportunity to lead its affairs can the country advance,” Saraki stated, adding that Governor Fintiri’s infrastructure demonstrated his capacity for leadership.
Governor of Nasarawa State and event chairman Abdullahi Sule publicly urged Fintiri to join the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“I would give it to you today as our new member if I came with the APC cap and flag,” Sule remarked.
Recalling the chaos of the 2023 governorship race, Governor Fintiri referred to himself as “a man of destiny” in his speech.
“Many pointless attempts were made to stop me. They peaked in the 2023 election, which was humiliating for the state, the country, and democracy around the world, he claimed.
He warned that these political forces are still at work and accused anonymous actors of treachery and moral lapse.
“This group of imposters and political puppeteers continues to operate, circling our democracy with impunity and danger while commuting between Yola and Abuja. We must vote against them, just like we did in 2023.
Governors Bala Mohammed (Bauchi) and Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), the deputy governor of Oyo State, and officials from Gombe, Borno, Yobe, Taraba, and Plateau states were present at the book launch.
The book was introduced by Mustapha Salihu, the APC’s Deputy National Vice Chairman (North-East), who also asked Adamawa citizens to keep funding Fintiri’s development initiatives.
