Dr. Chika Ethel Chukwudi, a Blue Economy specialist, has urged the government, stakeholders, and communities throughout Nigeria to work together in order to maximize the advantages of the Blue Economy for the creation of jobs, economic diversification, and overall national development.
The call was made by Dr. Chukwudi, an assistant director of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), during the launch of her book, “Blue Economy: Gateway To A Sustainable Future.”
She urged Nigeria to investigate the Blue Economy as a means of achieving sustainable growth, environmental stewardship, and economic diversification.
She added that the Blue Economy provides several advantages, such as better livelihoods, food security, and environmental preservation, to a country like Nigeria that is working to improve the well-being of its citizens.
In order to achieve this goal, Dr. Chukwudi recommended that community-based programs be established to support local economic development and encourage sustainable ocean management practices. Additionally, educators, community leaders, and entrepreneurs should be given training and capacity-building opportunities, and collaborations with government agencies, private sector businesses, and civil society organizations to support Blue Economy initiatives should be fostered.
Nigeria’s investigation of the blue economy’s unrealized potential must be established, she said, with a thorough grasp of the idea and the enormous advantages it offers the country.
The author revealed that her new book is divided into seven parts that address the cover, concepts, pillars, sectors, advantages, problems, and frameworks for implementing the Blue Economy in Nigeria.
“It explores key agencies under the Blue Economy in Nigeria and their collaborative roles in governance and economic growth,” she said, “tracing the evolution of the Blue Economy from traditional maritime activities to a modern, sustainable model.”
According to her, the book highlights the significance of the Blue Economy for Nigeria’s socioeconomic development while introducing the concept, terminology, and global relevance of the idea.
In addition to industries including fisheries, tourism, maritime transportation, renewable energy, and biotechnology, the book examines the four pillars of environmental sustainability, economic growth and innovation, social inclusion, and livelihood creation.
Along with structural and environmental issues, it talks about inclusive growth prospects, innovation, and job creation. It also promotes community and intergovernmental cooperation.
She clarified that countries may encourage sustainable growth, lessen poverty, and save the environment for coming generations by implementing a Blue Economy strategy.
