Gunmen believed to be Fulani militias broke into the Bindi community in the Ta-Hoss district of the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday night, killing at least 20 people.
Under the cover of darkness, the attackers reportedly launched a coordinated, house-to-house assault, killing residents—including women, children, and the elderly—who were unable to flee the bloodbath.
In addition, an unknown number of people were hurt as terrified locals sought refuge in the nearby bushes.
Gideon Manjal and Gadu Daniel Dong, the chairman and publicity secretary of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy’s (COPDEM) Riyom chapter, jointly released a statement on Tuesday and said the group was deeply frustrated by what they called a systemic failure to protect vulnerable communities.
According to the statement, “the attackers, who were correctly identified by survivors as Fulani extremists, stormed the Bindi community… and in their regular pattern of attack… systematically slaughtered over 20 innocent people.”
According to COPDEM, the attack occurred in spite of the obvious presence of security personnel and armored military equipment positioned nearby.

Armed with advanced weaponry, the invaders were reported to have burned down houses and uprooted several families. According to survivors, the attackers were open about their goal: to exterminate native populations and seize their territory.
“This attack took place… Families were uprooted, homes were destroyed, and trauma worsened, the nonprofit reported.
The coalition charged that the police had disregarded numerous alerts regarding the assailants’ whereabouts and presence.
These assailants are well-known. Local authorities and community leaders have frequently identified and reported their base settlements and hiding places. However, these threats persist year after year, frequently going unopposed, the organization continued.
They claimed that the recurring murders raise serious concerns regarding negligence, collusion, or state failure.
They stated that “the recurrent nature of these atrocities raises serious questions about inaction, negligence, and systemic compromise in addition to pointing to a failure of protection.”
The organization demanded that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Plateau State Government, and the security services immediately establish a state of emergency in the impacted areas, remove the identified terrorist strongholds, and begin a high-level military operation.
In addition, they called for immediate humanitarian assistance, community reconstruction initiatives, and psychological care for survivors.
The routine of condolence visits and meaningless press releases from public leaders, which COPDEM said have done little to halt the carnage, were harshly criticized.
Every day, our people are being laid to rest. We’re sick of silence and condolence calls. “We are fed up with press releases that don’t result in protection,” the statement said.
Communities such as Ta-Hoss, Jol, Rim, Bachi, Wereng, and Nding, they maintained, “deserve more than sympathy.” They are entitled to justice, safety, and dignity.
