An Air Peace pilot and a co-pilot have been charged by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) for using alcohol and hard narcotics.
Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, signed a preliminary report on Friday that revealed this information.
After an Air Peace aircraft they flew was involved in a runway incursion at the Port Harcourt International Airport on July 13, 2025, it was understood that NSIB inspectors tested the crew for the chemicals and found them to be positive.

The pilots of an Air Peace Boeing 737 aircraft were involved in a significant incident while transporting 103 passengers, according to the NSIB investigation.

After an unstable final approach, the aircraft, carrying 103 passengers on a scheduled domestic trip from Lagos to Port Harcourt, landed long on Runway 21, according to the NSIB. The plane finally stopped 209 meters inside the clearway after touching down 2,264 meters from the runway threshold.
“There were no reported injuries, and all passengers and crew disembarked safely.”
After taking off from Lagos, the domestic flight made an unstable final approach before touching down on Runway 21.
According to the NSIB, the plane landed 2,264 meters from the runway threshold—much beyond than the advised landing zone—and finally stopped 209 meters into the clearway.
The event caused immediate safety concerns, even though everyone on board disembarked safely.
According to the preliminary data that The PUNCH was able to receive, the flight crew’s toxicological test results were positive. Tests revealed that the crew had alcohol in their blood, while another crew member tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active ingredient in cannabis, commonly known as “India hemp.”
According to the agency, these toxicology data are being evaluated in the context of safety management and human performance, two crucial elements in the investigation of aircraft incidents.
The NSIB stated that it had immediately given the airline safety recommendations in response to the incident.
The statement goes on to say, “The flight crew’s initial toxicological testing showed positive results for a number of drugs, including markers of alcohol consumption. Another member of the cabin staff checked positive for THC, the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis. The investigation’s safety management and human performance components are reviewing these findings.
“Air Peace Limited has received immediate safety recommendations from the NSIB to support internal protocols for crew fitness-for-duty monitoring before to flight dispatch and to improve crew resource management training, specifically in handling unstable approaches and go-around choices.
On July 13, 2025, the aircraft crew had a toxicological test at the medical laboratory section of Rivers State Hospital Management in Port Harcourt, and they tested positive for a number of chemicals. Following the event, toxicological testing showed that the captain and first officer had recently consumed alcohol, as evidenced by positive Ethyl Glucuronide tests.
