Popular Anambra native physician Mr. Chidozie Nwangwu, commonly known as Akwa Okuko, received a two-year prison sentence.
Agents from the Agunechemba Security group detained Nwangwu in February 2025 on charges that he had assisted in money rituals and kidnapping, among other crimes.
Along with two of his coworkers, Mr. Okocha, also known as Onyeze Jesus, and Mr. Ekene, popularly known as Eke Hit, the native physician was subsequently taken into custody.
All three have been on trial while being held under detention in the custody of Agunechemba Security. However, on Friday, Nwangwu entered a guilty plea to the accusations against him, and Justice Jude Obiorah read his judgment.
After reading the ruling, Justice Obiorah disclosed that the indigenous physician had previously entered a plea agreement with the state government and admitted guilt to the allegations against him.
According to the judge, the suspect’s reasonable sorrow was the rationale for the two-year prison sentence on counts three, four, five, six, seven, and eight.
However, he dismissed counts one, two, and three of the accusations made against him. He said that the Anambra Homeland Law and the criminal code served as the foundation for Nwangwu’s conviction.
According to the law, anyone who asserts that they have the ability to heal or make someone wealthy by magical means, like Okeite, faces up to two years in prison, he declared.
“Anyone who engages in Okeite or Ezenwanyi in the state faces a six-year prison sentence.”
He found the local doctors guilty on counts three, four, and eight and was given a concurrent two-year prison sentence.
Justice Obiorah also imposed N20 million fines on the guilty on counts one, five, and eight.
The fine totals N60 million, but due to the accused’s repentance, it has been waived because the state does not require that kind of money in this particular situation, he said.
Despite his attorney’s request that he serve in the Agunechemba jail, he will serve the remaining 11 months of his sentence at Awka Correctional Center because he has already spent 13 months in detention. This is due to the fact that Agunechemba is not a correctional facility.
But in order to atone for his transgressions, the court issued mandates that he must follow. The judge declared that the defendant’s shrine in Oba would be demolished, that he would no longer practice Okeite after his release, and that he would have to publicly denounce it. A video recording of the statement will be made.
The judge declared that he would be appointed ambassador of youth reorientation and would have to provide a public warning to young people not to pursue prosperity by unearthly methods.
