Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP), claiming irreconcilable differences with the ruling party’s leadership.
El-Rufai expressed his unhappiness with the APC’s recent trajectory in a resignation letter to his Kaduna State ward on Monday.
“I have diligently served the APC and made my contributions to its viability as a political platform,” he made clear. “However, developments in the last two years have confirmed a troubling disregard for democratic principles and progressive values that I hold dear.”
El-Rufai, a founding member of the APC, helped the party win elections in 2015, 2019, and 2023. Reflecting on his time as Kaduna governor, he emphasized his administration’s emphasis on human development, education, healthcare, infrastructure, job creation, and investment.
Despite his achievements, he announced his desire to leave the APC due to growing concerns about governance and internal party politics.
“At this point in my political journey, I must seek another political platform for the pursuit of the progressive values I cherish,” according to him.
El-Rufai announced his transfer to the SDP by thanking his mentors, colleagues, and supporters and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing democratic ideas.

“As a member of the SDP, I am committed to fostering a unified democratic platform to challenge the APC in upcoming elections,” he told reporters.
According to The West, El-Rufai asked Nigerians who share his fears about the country’s future to join him in establishing the SDP as a viable option, underlining the importance of elevating Nigeria as a symbol of pride for Africa and the Black Race.
El-Rufai closed his statement with a call to unity and progress, promising to focus his efforts on building Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
