The House of Representatives was presented with recommendations for the establishment of 31 additional states in the nation’s six geopolitical zones.
According to reports, Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, read the letter in plenary in the Green Chamber.
In addition, Deputy Speaker Kalu read a committee letter during plenary that outlined the requirements that must be fulfilled before any petitions for state establishment can be granted.
The Committee believes that five of the ideas come from the North Central region, four from the North East, five from the North West, five from the South East, four from the South South, and seven from the South West.
Amana from Adamawa State, Katagum from Bauchi State, Savannah from Borno State, Muri from Taraba State, and Okun, Okura, and Confluence to be formed from Kogi State are a some of the states that are being suggested.
Tiga and Ari from Kano, Kebbi state’s Kainji, New Kaduna state’s Gujarat state, and the South East’s Etiti, Orashi, Adada, and Orlu Aba are few more.
Additionally, they consist of Ogoja from Cross River, Warri from Delta, Ori and Obolo from Rivers, Torumbe from Ondo, Ibadan from Oyo, Lagoon from Lagos, and Ogun, as well as Ijebu from Ogun and Oke Ogun/Ijesha from Oyo/Ogun/Osun states.
In his statement, Kalu stated that a request for the creation of a new state could only be approved by the National Assembly if it was backed by a minimum of three-quarters of the Senate, House of Representatives, House of Assembly, and Local Government Council members in the region.
The Federal Republic of Nigeria’s Constitution, as modified, Section 8, governs this procedure, and local government advocates who support the establishment of more local government areas are merely reminded of this.
According to Section 8.3 of the Constitution, the National Assembly must be notified of the results of the referendum by the State Houses of Assembly in order to fulfill state demands.
“Strict adherence to the requirements will be required when resubmitting proposals. Please deliver three hard copies of the complete memorandum proposal to the Committee Secretariat in Room H331, House of Representatives, White House, National Assembly Complex, Abuja.

Additionally, subcopies must be electronically submitted to info.hccr.gov.nj, the Committee’s email address.
“Only proposals that adhere to the established guidelines will be considered by the Committee, which is still committed to supporting implementation efforts that are in line with the Constitutional provisions.”
