For the second time on Friday, Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was unable to begin his defense in the continuing terrorism trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Earlier, Kanu had chosen to represent himself. According to reports, he told Justice James Omotosho that his estranged legal team had not handed him his case file.
I did not receive the file from my lawyer, who left the case yesterday, my lord. In order to prepare his defense, Kanu requested an adjournment, saying, “The few people that would have brought this were precluded from seeing me.”
While urging the court to follow its previous ruling for Kanu to deliver his defense within six days, Federal Government lead lawyer Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN) did not object to the proposal.
“I am aware that the defendant has a six-day statute of limitations to defend himself. Yesterday was wasted by the defendant. Lord, it’s the second day. “Your lordship, please adhere to the standing order,” Awomolo urged.
Kanu was urged by Justice Omotosho in his decision to “judiciously use the opportunity” provided by Section 36 of the Constitution, which protects his right to a fair trial.
However, the judge pointed out that Kanu could not be forced to continue if he decided to forego the right.
To give the IPOB leader time to present his defense, he postponed the court until Monday.
