BREAKING: Kogi Senator Natasha Gets Bail on Fresh Charges

In a lawsuit involving her and the federal government, embattled Kogi legislator Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was granted bail on self-recognition.
Akpoti-Uduaghan reportedly appeared in front of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday morning for her second arraignment in connection with the alleged defamation of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The suspended legislator, who represented Kogi Central, was joined in court today by a number of friends, her husband, Emmanuel Uduaghan, and human rights advocate Aisha Yesufu.

Recall that Akpoti-Uduaghan first appeared before the Federal Capital Territory High Court on comparable allegations on June 19, 2025.

Justice Mohammed Umar, the trial judge, turned down the Federal Government’s plea to issue a bench warrant against her for missing the previous hearing.

However, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is facing a new six-count prosecution from the Federal Government in the Federal High Court.

According to Naija News, the troubled politician, who had already been suspended by the Senate for six months, was charged with making a false claim of assassination in the case known as CR/297/25.

According to the Federal Government, the legislator allegedly committed the crime on April 3 while addressing her supporters in Kogi state and during a live broadcast on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Akpoti-Uduaghan was specifically accused of inviting Senate President Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello to the meeting when the assassination plan was developed.

The defendant demanded that Bello and Akpabio agree that she should be slain in Kogi state under what appeared to be a mob action, according to the federal government.

However, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s assertion is deemed to be a false imputation that will damage Senator Akpabio’s and former Governor Bello’s reputations, which is a violation of Section 24(2)(c) of the Cybercrime Act.

Meanwhile, the defendant was presented with the charge before the trial’s judge, Justice Muhammad Umar, who then entered a plea of not guilty.

Mohammed Abubakar, the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF), informed the court that he had not filed any paperwork challenging her bail.

However, the DPPF asked the court to use its authority to set requirements that would guarantee the defendant’s attendance at her trial.

Prof. Roland Otaru, SAN, the defendant’s attorney, informed the court that on June 20, he had filed a bail application.

Given that she represents a constituency that encompasses five Local Government Areas (LGAs), Prof. Otaru, SAN, reassured the court that his client does not pose a flight risk and that he will be present for her trial.

He further highlighted the defendant’s standing as a senior member of the legal profession by pointing out to the judge that an Abuja High Court had previously granted her bail in relation to a similar case.

Justice Umar stated that he was inclined to grant the defendant bail upon self-recognition after taking into account the arguments made by both parties.

The trial judge stated that the defendant’s status as a serving senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was undeniable and that the allegations against her included offenses that might be resolved through bail.

The case was subsequently postponed until September 22 for an additional hearing.
