The appointment of Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) from the North-Central as the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been accepted by the National Council of State.
Amupitan was introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the candidate to take up the role after Professor Mahmood Yakubu resigned.
Yakubu served from 2015 till October 2025, in case you forgot.
According to reports, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made this revelation in a statement on Thursday.
According to the release, Amupitan is the first apolitical candidate from Kogi, North-Central state, to be nominated for the position, President Tinubu told the council.
The nomination received unanimous support from the council, and Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo praised Amupitan as a man of character.
Now, in accordance with the constitution, President Tinubu will forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for review.
Amupitan, who is 58 years old and is from Ayetoro Gbede, Ijumu LGA in Kogi State, teaches law at the University of Jos, Plateau. He is a university alumnus as well.
Company law, the law of evidence, corporate governance, and privatization law are his areas of expertise. In September 2014, he became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
It was April 25, 1967, that Amupitan was born.
He attended Kwara State Polytechnic in Ilorin from 1982 to 1984 and the University of Jos from 1984 to 1987 after finishing his elementary and secondary school. In 1988, he received his bar call.
In 1989, after serving as a National Youth Service member at the Bauchi State Publishing Corporation in Bauchi from 1988 to 1989, he began his academic career, earning an LLM at UNIJOS in 1993 and a PhD in 2007.
In addition to being the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Joseph Ayo Babalola University in Osun State, he currently holds the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos.
He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Law from 2008 to 2014, the Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors from 2012 to 2014, and the Head of Public Law from 2006 to 2008, among other academic roles at UNIJOS.
Outside of the classroom, Amupitan has held positions as a member of the Council of Legal Education (2008-2014), a board member of Integrated Dairies Limited in Vom, and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Governing Council. He served on the board of Riss Oil Limited in Abuja from 1996 until 2004.
Amupitan is the author of numerous legal volumes, including Introduction to the Law of Trust in Nigeria (2014), Corporate Governance: Models and Principles (2008), Documentary Evidence in Nigeria (2008), Evidence Law: Theory and Practice in Nigeria (2013), and Principles of Company Law (2013).
He is married with four kids.
