The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has been deemed fit to stand trial for alleged terrorism by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
On Thursday, the NMA told the Federal High Court in Abuja that Kanu’s condition is not life-threatening.
The medical panel that the NMA President established said that it had completed the IPOB leader’s health evaluation that the court had mandated.
Two weeks prior, the NMA was instructed by Justice James Omotosho to conduct an independent evaluation of Kanu’s health status due to contradicting medical reports that were provided by the prosecution and defense.
According to the panel’s report, which was partially read aloud during Thursday’s proceedings and submitted to the court on October 13 by the prosecution team under Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the medical body affirmed that the defendant is fit to stand trial and that his condition does not present an immediate threat to his life.
Justice Omotosho determined that the court was satisfied that the defendant could go forward with his trial based on the medical findings and the fact that the parties had not received any objections from the counsel.
As a result, the judge gave Kanu six straight days to start and finish his defense, starting on October 23.
Kanu’s lead attorney, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), filed an oral motion with Justice Omotosho asking for permission to have a private consultation with his legal team outside of the Department of State Services’ facilities.
The defense team, Agabi had claimed, was concerned that the DSS may listen in on or record their conversations with Kanu.
Thus, the judge authorized the private meeting to take place in the courtroom, with just Kanu and his attorneys present. The trial will resume on October 23 after the consultation, which is set for October 22 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
