The Social Democratic Party’s (SDP) National Working Committee (NWC) has declared that Shehu Gabam, the Party’s national chairman, and two NWC members—National Auditor Nnadi Clarkson and National Youth Leader Chukwuma Uchechukwu—will be suspended immediately.
In a statement released on Tuesday, June 25, 2025, the party’s national publicity secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, reportedly said that party members had been suspended due to accusations of serious financial malfeasance, theft, misappropriation, and diversion of party funds. According to Aiyenigba, the National Chairman and other implicated NWC members have been suspended in order to allow for a comprehensive inquiry.
The SDP chieftain claims that in accordance with the party’s Constitution, Sadiq Umar Abubakar, the Deputy National Chairman (North), has taken over as Acting National Chairman in the interim.
The Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) and all pertinent agencies have been informed of these officers’ suspension, Aiyenigba continued.

The announcement states: “The decision was made in response to resolutions passed by the National Working Committee (NWC), in which it was shown that the suspended officials were involved in a number of illegal financial transactions, personal enrichment schemes, and the transfer of funds from the party’s accounts without the NWC’s consent.
When it was found that the National Chairman had submitted an unauthorized financial statement to INEC, as required of all political parties, this incident initially came to light.
Additionally, a synopsis of the bogus account appeared in the newspapers. Upon learning of this, the NWC resolved to notify law police of the bogus anomalies.
“The National Chairman and two other NWC members involved in the egregious financial misconduct have been suspended by the NWC, which will also show the public that the Party, which is widely regarded by Nigerians as a disciplined party and a legitimate alternative political platform for national redemption, has zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of office.” We must always maintain our political party’s integrity.
“To evaluate all financial documents and suggest additional disciplinary or legal measures, an interim investigating panel has been established.
The donations and resources realized from the sale of nomination forms in the general elections of 2023, as well as other monies from the party accounts, make up the hundreds of millions of naira in plundered cash.
“Uchechukwu Ogbonna Chukwuma, Nze Nnadi Clarkson, and Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam are suspended with immediate effect.”
