Today, the appointment of five resident electoral commissioners (RECs) to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was approved by the Nigerian Senate on Wednesday.
This affirmation reportedly followed the presentation of the INEC report by the Senate committee during today’s plenary session.
The people that have been verified are Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem, Chukwuemeka Obeziako, Umar Yusuf Garba, Sa’ad Umar Idris, and Umar Mukhtar. Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution amendment was followed in making these appointees.
Under the direction of Oyo South Senator Sharafadeen Alli, the committee confirmed that the candidates met the requirements for their positions. It is expected that the recently appointed RECs would each hold office for a period of five years.

On March 18, President Bola Tinubu wrote to the Senate to submit the names for the new RECs.
The letter states: “I am pleased to forward for confirmation by the senate the appointment of the following five (5) nominees as Resident Electoral Commissioners in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in accordance with the provision of section 154(1) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) constitution.”
“The esteemed Senate is invited to take note that I have approved the re-appointment of the Borno State commissioner for a second term, and this letter supersedes my previous one referred to as pres134/2 dated March 12th.”
