On Thursday, October 23, Brigadier-General Nicholas Rume officially took over as the 23rd Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, marking the beginning of a new era in the brigade’s command.

Rume reportedly took up his duties after the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant-General Olufemi Oluyede, authorized the most recent posting and reassignment of top commanders within the Nigerian Army.

The handover ceremony was held at the Brigade Headquarters, Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin, according to a statement made by Captain Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations.

The handing-over letters were signed, the departing Commander gave a final speech to the troops, and the command flag was ceremoniously presented to the incoming Commander, according to the statement.

The raising of a new brigade flag at the Quarter Guard, a military custom signifying the start of a new command era, marked the ceremony’s culmination.

During the ceremony, Rume promised to step up efforts to combat kidnapping, banditry, and other criminal activity in Kwara and the surrounding states.

Brigadier-General Ezra Bawa Barkins, the departing commander, thanked the Chief of Army Staff for the chance to serve and praised the soldiers for their commitment, professionalism, and loyalty in his parting remarks.

“I want to thank all of the officers and soldiers for their unwavering support during my time here. To guarantee ongoing operational success, I implore you to show my successor the same degree of devotion and collaboration,” Barkins stated.

Noting that the brigade’s actions had been crucial in battling illegal mining, abduction, and banditry throughout the Kwara, Kogi, and Niger States, he urged soldiers to maintain their discipline and vigilance.

As he assumed leadership, Brigadier-General Rume praised his predecessor’s accomplishments and pledged to expand on them by working more closely with other security agencies.

“Teamwork, discipline, and professionalism are necessary to combat insecurity,” Rume stated. “I pledge to collaborate closely with all parties involved to guarantee our people’s long-term safety and peace.”

He gave locals his word that the 22 Armoured Brigade would continue to play an active part in anti-illegal mining, anti-banditry, and anti-kidnapping activities in the North-Central area.

He went on to say, “We will keep up our defense of our country’s territorial integrity and safeguard people and property in Kwara and the neighboring states.”

Recent postings by the Nigerian Army demonstrated its dedication to enhancing regional stability and command effectiveness.

According to reports, the 22 Armoured Brigade is still a crucial operational unit in the North-Central zone, assisting with cooperative operations with the Nigeria Police Force, Civil Defense, and other security organizations in continuous attempts to bring the area back to peace and dismantle criminal networks.
