In a recent meeting with Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Policy Communication, the Christian Association of Nigeria, or CAN, provided clarification.

The gathering was held at the National Christian Center in Abuja, which is home to the CAN Secretariat.
Bwala’s goal during the visit was to learn CAN’s stance on the international responses to statements made by US Senator Ted Cruz, who called the widespread attacks on Christian communities in Nigeria a “Christian genocide.”

Both Christians and Muslims have experienced insecurity, Bwala said, adding that the present administration inherited the issue and is attempting to resolve it, according to CAN.

According to CAN, it made it apparent to Bwala that its stance on the matter has been set for a long time and has not altered.

It further stated that Christian communities have been the target of many, well-planned, and violent attacks in several areas of Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt, resulting in thousands of fatalities, the destruction of villages, and the displacement of families.

According to CAN, the attacks and killings are part of a larger pattern of violence that has continued for years without any justice or closure, rather than being isolated incidents.

The press release “Presidency Debunks Western Christian Genocide Narrative in Dialogue with CAN Leadership,” which was purportedly released by Bwala, CAN alleged, frightened them.

It said that by characterizing the ongoing deaths as a “so-called Christian genocide,” the paper inaccurately implied that Archbishop Daniel Okoh, President of CAN, disregarded or minimized them.

“That portrayal is blatantly unjust and entirely untrue. CAN’s media team filmed the meeting, and Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the organization’s president, signed a statement stating that Archbishop Okoh never used such language or voiced such an opinion.

The suffering of many Christians who have lost loved ones, homes, and places of worship in targeted attacks is trivialized when the tragedy is referred to as a “so-called genocide.”

CAN went on to say that Bishop Mike Akpami, its Director of Planning, Research, and Strategy, provided confirmed evidence during the meeting that demonstrated planned and regular attacks against Christians in Nigeria and other parts of Africa.

Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN President; Dean Rev. Ozumba, Emmanuel Nicodemus, Director of Education, Women & Youth; Dame Comfort Otera Chigbue (Esq), Director of Legal & Public Affairs; Bishop Mike Akpami, Director of Planning, Research & Strategy; Prophet Commodore Abimbola Ayuba, Director of National Issues & Social Welfare; Rev. Dr. Simon Dolly, Secretary, North Central Zone; and Dr. Victor Ivoke, Senior Special Assistant to the CAN President, were among those present, according to the report. To be clear, Dr. Celestine Aharanwa and Assistant General Secretary Rev. Dr. Uzoaku Williams, whose names were mentioned in certain accounts, did not attend the meeting.

The top Christian organization urged the federal government and security forces to take swift, equitable, and open action to stop the deaths and prosecute those responsible.

It also exhorted government representatives and members of the media to speak with responsibility, empathy, and the truth because thoughtless remarks might exacerbate tensions and threaten peace.
