Due to the traffic jams that travelers across are experiencing, President Bola Tinubu has ordered the suspension of the recently implemented cashless payment system at airports.
Following President Bola Tinubu’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, revealed this.
He pointed out that the strategy had made traveling extremely difficult and congested, especially at the airports in Lagos and Abuja.
He claims that the cashless method was implemented to reduce corruption and improve income collection transparency.
“The goal of implementing a cashless system was to eradicate airport corruption.
“However, the system’s implementation caused a lot of gridlock, and Nigerians have been suffering as a result of the delays.”
According to him, the president ordered an immediate restoration to the prior payment schedule while changes were being made.
“The current method is causing a lot of traffic, therefore Mr. President ordered that we suspend it.
“He suggested that we return to the status quo before properly perfecting the system.”
The president ordered that the platform evaluation be completed as soon as possible, Keyamo continued.
He stated, “The President said we should work with the private sector to create an electronic system that will collect the money smoothly and without causing delays.”
The minister promised that discussions about the next course of action will continue with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.
FAAN started enforcing the cashless policy on March 1, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The mandate required drivers to utilize electronic channels or prepaid access cards instead of cash at airport toll gates.
However, the development caused traffic jams, and some travelers missed their flights as a result of toll point delays.
