The explosion, which happened at around 6:00 am, was said to have temporarily interrupted official operations while security personnel rushed in to secure the area and evaluate the situation.
In a statement provided to reporters, Bayelsa State Police Commissioner CP Iyamah confirmed the development and stated that no one had been killed and no property had been harmed.
“The State Secretariat Complex experienced a suspected IED explosion today, February 11, 2026, at approximately 0600 hours. The Bayelsa State Police Command would like to notify the public of this incident.” “I got to the scene right away and led the Special Drone Unit, Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit, and other tactical teams,” he stated.
“Operators from the Explosive Ordinance Unit quickly contained the explosion after arriving on the scene.”
“An additional explosive device was found and neutralized, and the area was secured,” he added.
Iyamah stated, “The area was closed off right after, and after a thorough investigation, EOD personnel found one unexploded IED and made it safe. No one was killed, and no property was damaged.
“One Pentecost Elijah, a 60-year-old resident of Southern Ijaw LGA, Bayelsa State’s Otuan Community, was taken into custody at the scene in relation to the incident.”
When the investigations are finished, he said, the suspect will face charges in court. The suspect is presently being questioned at the State Criminal Investigation Department.

According to reports, the Bayelsa State Government temporarily suspended operations at the secretariat for four hours after the event as a precaution.
