Olukayode Ariwoola on Thursday formally retired as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), in a ceremony held at the Supreme Court premises in Abuja.
This marks the end of an illustrious career spanning over four decades. The valedictory session honored Ariwoola’s dedication to the judiciary, as he reached the mandatory retirement age of 70.
Ariwoola’s journey to the pinnacle of Nigeria’s judiciary began with his graduation from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1980. He was called to the Bar in 1981 and enrolled as a solicitor at the Supreme Court of Nigeria. His judicial career saw him serve as a judge of the Oyo State High Court before his elevation to the Court of Appeal in 2005.

Ariwoola’s tenure as CJN was marked by significant events, including his swearing-in by former President Muhammadu Buhari on October 12, 2022, following the controversial resignation of his predecessor, Ibrahim Muhammad.
As the judiciary follows established convention, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the next most senior justice of the Supreme Court, is expected to take over as acting CJN.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has already recommended her to President Bola Tinubu as the next substantive CJN, paving the way for a seamless transition.
