Coach Bright Ozebagbe has returned to Ikorodu City FC with a strategy that may not seem like much at first, but in the unpredictable world of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), staying in the “green zone” for as long as possible may be the most crucial objective of all.
Coaches refer to the safe area of the NPFL table that is close enough to the relegation zone to allow for the possibility of moving up in the rankings or even competing for the championship as the “green zone,” for those who are not familiar with the phrase.
Upon my return to Ikorodu City, I was given a new goal: to spend as much time as possible in the “green zone.” Ozebagbe stated earlier today, August 13, “We will see what that translates into by the end of the season.”
This appears to be a departure from the aspirations expressed by his predecessor, Nurudeen Aweroro, who left for Shooting Stars Sports Club in July after stating that the Lagos-based team’s objective was to contend for the NPFL championship. After leading Ikorodu City into the NPFL in the 2023–2024 season, Ozebagbe is taking a more measured approach.
“I am pleased to be a part of the project that is Ikorodu City. Our goal was to stay in the Premier League, and we succeeded in doing so last season. I thought the team did a good job. We will now establish new goals for ourselves,” he stated.
In the midst of the 2024–2025 season, Ozebagbe left Ikorodu City on mutual terms. Aweroro guided the team to fourth place with 59 points from 38 games while he was away, one point short of playing in the continental league.
During his time away from the Oga Boys, Ozebagbe kept himself occupied by accepting a season-long coaching position with Ijobu United in the Nigerian National League (NNL). He has returned to Ikorodu City in the midst of a coaching setup change.
Ali Kandil, the club’s former fitness trainer, was elevated to head coach and given weekly responsibility for leading the first team, while Ozebagbe is in charge of the larger football structure, which includes long-term planning, recruitment, and youth development.
When asked about his aspirations, the coach dismissed any notion of greatness for himself.
“Honestly,” he added, “it’s about the project, not about me. In the end, everyone will be able to see what our goal or aspirations are for this season. The squad is the main focus; I don’t want to become personal. We’ll concentrate on our season’s goals and objectives as a team and put in a lot of effort to meet them.
Last season’s Ikorodu City’s survival was a little triumph in and of itself. In a league where margins are extremely narrow, being in the “green zone” may not seem glamorous for a club that is still establishing itself among Nigeria’s best, but it can mean the difference between long-term success and starting over.
Furthermore, Ikorodu City’s 2025–2026 NPFL campaign will be based on perseverance rather than loudness, if Ozebagbe’s composed, methodical tone is any indication.

2022–2023 season promotion to the NPFL under Bright Ozebagbe.
Fourth-place finish from the previous season: Surprisingly, they ended the season as a title contender and avoided relegation by a wide margin.
The biggest success was defeating Katsina United 6-0 at home.
The worse loss was against Remo Stars, 4-1, on the road.
2025–2026. Goal: Continue to be an NPFL and compete for the title.
