By jumping into alliances without defined structures and agreements, the opposition coalition may be unintentionally supporting President Bola Tinubu’s political agenda, according to Datti Baba-Ahmed, the former vice presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP).
The current coalition’s actions, particularly its adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the general elections in 2027, are comparable to the 2014 merger that created the All Progressives Congress (APC), Baba-Ahmed said in an interview with ARISE NEWS.
Although he has had conversations with coalition leaders, he explained, he has remained in the Labour Party and is instead keeping a close eye on developments. He claims that his strategy is “cautious and strategic” and that he studies the coalition’s “body language” before taking any action.

Let me just state that the opposition is correct in all it is doing. I completely support coming together. The guiding concepts and goals of it are all sound. Additionally, you’re playing someone else’s game. Tinubu is in control of this match.
Datti emphasized the importance of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections and cautioned against ignoring it.
“The Labour Party deserves better than to be ignored.” Despite all the reservations, we are aware of the roles that each and every party is playing. By our own assessment, this party received more than 10 million votes. Notwithstanding the rulings of the legal system, this party defeated the APC and PDP jointly.
The quality of primary elections will be a true test of the coalition’s credibility and preparedness for governance, he added, underscoring the significance of internal democracy inside the alliance.
He stated, “Good primaries are the first step toward good governance.”
