The Renewed Hope Estate Project in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State, has not gone as planned, according to the House Committee on Urban Development and Regional Planning.

Hon. Awaji-Inombek Abiante Dagomie, the committee chairman, chastised the four contractors working on the project and emphasized the necessity of hiring qualified contractors to guarantee correct execution.

The Umu Etuk-Spencer Esin slum upgrading road network in Oron was poorly constructed, which is why the committee is unhappy. Less than 6% of the work has been completed thus far, even though the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has provided up to 30% of the funding. By September 2024, the project, which was granted in June 2024, should have been finished.

For federal projects, Hon. Abiante emphasized that Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, should work with honest and qualified contractors. Citing the contractor’s use of inferior materials, he demanded that the Umu Etuk-Spencer Esin road slum upgrade be completely rebuilt.

The contractors in charge of the 250 housing units in Uruan, Uyo Capital City, and the slum upgrading road in Oron Local Government Area have been charged with undermining the Renewed Hope housing initiative, which is being run by the administration of President Bola Tinubu. Hyosungs Nigeria Limited, Tunsoye Trust Global Link, Springwell Intercontinental Resources, and Logine Limited are the contractors in question.

Abiante gave the clerk instructions to invite the four contractors and the Minister of Urban Development and Regional Planning to address the committee. This action seeks to highlight the obstacles and constraints impeding the projects’ execution.

The federal government’s effort to build affordable homes includes the Renewed Hope Estate Project. The government’s capacity to accomplish its housing goals has come under scrutiny due to the project’s sluggish progress and subpar implementation.

The goal of the Renewed Hope Housing Program, according to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, is to provide 50,000 housing units throughout Nigeria. It is anticipated that the program will improve lives, provide jobs, and accelerate economic growth.

The oversight visit by the House Committee emphasizes how important it is for project implementation to be transparent and accountable. Achieving the government’s development objectives depends on contractors meeting the necessary criteria.
