Because the Medical Director of Ikorodu General Hospital in Lagos has not produced records pertaining to the remains of the deceased reporter, the magistrate overseeing the Coroner’s Court investigation into the death of Mr. Pelumi Onifade, a journalist with Gboah TV, has ordered contempt proceedings against him.
On Tuesday, October 7, 2025, during the inquest’s resumed hearing, the directive was given by the coroner, Mrs. Temitope Oladele. Along with a Certified True Copy of the court’s previous order, she directed that Form 48, the “Notice of Consequences of Disobedience of Court Order,” be issued and served to the Medical Director or any other designated hospital official.
On August 8, 2025, the hospital received an order requiring documentation of the deposit, release, or present condition of Onifade’s remains. Following an application by Mr. Monday Arunsi, Media Rights Agenda (MRA) attorney, who told the court that the Medical Director had disregarded the order, arguing that the required data was private, the direction was issued.
Following the filing of a wrongful death lawsuit against the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos State Government by MRA on behalf of Onifade’s family, the inquest was ordered by a Federal High Court in Lagos. The complaint calls for responsibility and a comprehensive examination of the journalist’s death, which happened in October 2020 during the #EndSARS demonstrations.
Mr. Samuel Adebola, the lead attorney for MRA from the Charles Musa & Co. law firm, informed the court during Tuesday’s proceedings that he and two other attorneys, Mr. Arunsi and Ms. Jennifer Wala, visited Ikorodu General Hospital on October 2, 2025, to meet with the Medical Director in accordance with the coroner’s most recent decision.
The team was requested to wait, he added, because the Medical Director was apparently in a meeting, but they were left unattended after waiting for almost five hours.
According to Mr. Adebola, the hospital and its director were properly served with the August 8 order on August 26, 2025, but they did not comply or attempt to comply within the seven days that the court had imposed. Consequently, he requested that the Medical Director get a citation for contempt.
Following review of the application, Coroner Oladele issued an order for the prompt issuance and service of Form 48, stating that noncompliance with court orders will result in legal repercussions.
For a follow-up hearing, the inquest was subsequently postponed until October 22, 2025.
In 2020, while covering the #EndSARS protests, police officers from the Lagos State Taskforce reportedly detained the late Pelumi Onifade. A few days later, his body was found in the mortuary of Ikorodu General Hospital, causing public indignation and media and human rights groups to call for justice.
