The Federal High Court in Abuja has authorized the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) to detain Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) A. A. Babangida and 19 other individuals for their alleged roles in banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism.

Justice Peter Lifu approved the DIA’s ex parte application, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1146/2024, allowing the detention of the suspects for 30 days. The court was informed that this detention period is necessary for a thorough investigation into the allegations against them.

The suspects include Usman Idris, Abu Safiyanu, Alhassan Idris, Sahada Ishaka, Abubakar Ibrahim Sani Bello, Yahaya Abdullahi, Haruna Salisu, Mohammed Muazu, Nura Idris, Manu Mohammed, Umar Lamu, Abubakar Mandara, Suleiman Mohammed, Alhaji Madayi, Amodu Oghewe, and Uzoma Aghaoyibo.

ASP Babangida is accused of aiding Boko Haram, bandits, and ISWAP members in their terror activities across various regions. He was apprehended in June based on an intelligence report and has been in DIA custody since then.

S.A. Aminu, counsel for the DIA, argued that the agency needs to conduct a critical investigation into the unlawful activities of Babangida and the other suspects before transferring them to the Attorney General of the Federation for prosecution. Aminu also requested a 90-day detention period, citing the complex nature of the suspects’ involvement and recent apprehensions of bomb experts linked to the group.

The DIA’s affidavit detailed the information leading to the arrests of the suspects. However, Justice Lifu denied the 90-day request, noting the suspects have already been in custody for three months. He affirmed that the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty and ordered the DIA to continue its investigation within legal limits until its completion.
