The sexual and gender-based violence court of the Anambra State High Court, located in Awka, has sentenced a 34-year-old school teacher to 12 years in prison for raping an 11-year-old student.
For defiling his student, a junior secondary one student at St. Christopher’s Junior Seminary, located in the 3-3 area of Onitsha, the instructor, Mr. Pascal Ofomata, was found guilty.
Right after delivering the verdict, Justice Peace Otti, the presiding judge, spoke and praised the diligence and skill of the prosecution’s lawyer, Chinelo Akorah Esq., for pursuing the case to its conclusion.
She reportedly praised Akorah’s farewell speech for being thorough and powerful. “It is extremely uncommon for cases of sexual offenses against boys to reach a definitive conclusion and for offenders to receive justice,” she said.
Previously, the defendant denied any knowledge of the boy, claiming that he never touched the victim’s anus. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the victim licked his penis and that he instructed him to kiss him.
Nevertheless, following a compelling and emotional trial that featured the testimony of the victim’s physician and the investigating police officer, the court upheld the case.

The defendant was found guilty and given a 12-year prison term.
In the past, Pascal Ofomata, the defendant, entered a not guilty plea to the three counts that were brought against him.
Sections 3(1) and 4(1) of the Violence against Persons Prohibition Law of Anambra State, respectively, allow him to be punished for rape and physical harm to the boy.
Sexual abuse is the third complaint against him, and it is punishable under section 35(2) of the Anambra State Child’s Right Law.
In addition, the court prohibited him from working in any company that employs anyone under the age of 18, including elementary, secondary, and even university institutions.
