The Oyo State Environmental Mobile and Tribunal Court convicted 13 people who ran unauthorized diesel sales operations along the Toll Gate axis of the Lagos-Ibadan highway.
The offenders were fined ₦200,000 or five years in prison for violating the state’s environmental regulations by indulging in hazardous waste-generating operations without necessary permissions from relevant regulatory agencies.
This was revealed in a statement signed by Dotun Oyelade, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, and retrieved on Monday.
According to the statement, the decision was handed down at the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) in Ibadan.

The Presiding Judge, Jubreel Adio, stated that selling diesel and petroleum products without proper authorization poses substantial environmental and safety risks and carries severe penalties under Oyo State Environmental Laws and Regulations.
The court was cited as saying, “The defendants admitted to operating without the necessary approvals and pleaded for leniency.” However, ignorance of the law is no justification.
Although the standard penalty for the infraction is ₦5 million or a five-year prison term, the court granted discretion because the convicts were first-time violators and appear to be ordinary traders. A warning fee of ₦200,000 was given for each.
“May this act as a deterrence for others. If any of the accused return to this tribunal, they will face the full force of the law, with no leniency,” Barrister Jubreel said.
As part of a goodwill gesture, two community leaders, Mr. Olalere Hassan and Mr. Saheed Folarin, agreed to act as sureties for the condemned persons.
Hassan has put the documentation for his silver 2006 Toyota RAV4 registered as LLD 587JQ as collateral till all fines are paid.
The presiding judge made it clear that if the fines were not paid, the sureties would be held accountable.
He did, however, underline that the tribunal’s objective is not to punish without cause, but to enforce compliance, protect the environment, and maintain public safety.
“We’ve previously fined comparable criminals up to ₦1 million each. This court is not used for extortion, but rather to uphold the law. Today, you’re fortunate. The next time, you might not get a lenient judge,” the statement warned.
