Two men were sentenced to death by hanging and one to 21 years in jail by an Abeokuta High Court on Thursday for armed robbery and attempted murder.

The three defendants, Wahabi Idowu, Akeem Sulaimon, and Wale Adedeji, were found guilty on four counts that included attempted murder, conspiracy, and armed robbery.

Justice Olugboyega Ogunfowora stated in his ruling that the court was certain the accused individuals committed the charges against them.

After concluding that the defendants were guilty as charged, Ogunfowora sentenced the three to 14 years in prison on counts one and two for conspiracy and armed robbery.

On counts four and five, he sentenced Idowu to 21 years in prison for attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Idowu was found guilty and given a 21-year prison sentence with hard labor, while Adedeji and Sulaimon were sentenced to death by hanging.

Mrs. Bolariwa Adebowale, the prosecuting attorney, had previously informed the court that the defendants had committed the crimes at No. 40 Merroy Road, Safari Junction Onikolobo neighborhood in Abeokuta, on October 29, 2018, at approximately 12:30 am.

Using knives and a cutlass, the inmates broke into the home of Mr. Rasheed Fajinmi, tried to murder him, and took his Ford Jeep, registered MUS 769FF, according to Adebowale.

In addition, she stated that the complainant’s clothing, shoes, four cell phones, two ATM cards, jewelry, a 32-inch plasma TV, and N64,000 in cash were taken away by the inmates.

She added that the inmates also stole an iPhone, five Nokia phones, and wristwatches from one Miss Boluwatife Fajinmi.

The attorney claimed that the offenses violated the 2016 law that forbids cultism, armed robbery, kidnapping, forced entry, occupation of landed properties, and other anti-violence and associated offenses, namely sections 21(b) and 1(1)(a)(5).
