Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has had his sentence postponed by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
According to reports, the judge, who found Kanu guilty on all seven counts, has scheduled the IPOB Leader’s sentencing for 4 p.m.
After Nnamdi Kanu was found guilty of all seven charges linked to terrorism, the Federal Government requested that the Federal High Court in Abuja execute him.
Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the government’s lead attorney, formally submitted the request on Thursday, just after Justice James Omotosho ruled Kanu guilty on all counts.
The conviction came after a protracted trial during which the prosecution used broadcast materials, statements, and recordings to prove Kanu’s role in inciting violence and directing attacks against security personnel.
Shortly after the verdict was handed down, Awomolo addressed the court, arguing that the severity of Kanu’s crimes called for the most severe penalty permitted by Nigerian law.
He said that the crimes for which Kanu was found guilty were part of what he called a risky and unstable pattern of behavior rather than being little or isolated occurrences.
The senior attorney claimed that Kanu should not be given mercy by the court because he had done “many illegalities.”
