Plans are underway for a nationwide verification exercise after the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, discovered that deceased people were listed on the current voter registration.
This was announced by INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan on Wednesday during the Commission’s first quarterly consultative meeting with CSOs, or civil society organizations.
Analyzing data from the November off-cycle governorship election in Anambra State showed a stark discrepancy between the number of registered voters and those who actually cast ballots, which prompted the review, according to Amupitan.
“We found that just about 600 of the nearly 2.9 million registered voters in Anambra State cast ballots during the off-cycle elections in November.
This represents only around 20% of all voters that are registered to vote. The names of notable Nigerian politicians who have passed away are still listed on the record, so we chose to look it over again.
“We don’t expect the dead to come from the grave to vote, so that affects the integrity of the register and we need to do a cleanup.”
The commission claims that in order to purify the database and restore public trust in the election process, the verification procedure is necessary.
The results, according to the head of INEC, have seriously called into doubt the validity of the register that is now being used for national elections.
He emphasized that accurate and current voter registration is essential to holding legitimate elections, pointing out that the inclusion of names that are ineligible erodes trust in the democratic process.
The proposed verification exercise, according to Amupitan, will concentrate on eliminating the names of deceased individuals, fixing data inaccuracies, and collaborating with pertinent government authorities to certify information.
He continued by saying that the cleanup operation is a component of the Commission’s larger initiatives to increase electoral legitimacy and guarantee that only qualified Nigerians are registered to vote.
