According to Dele Momodu, a member of the opposition coalition, the 2027 presidential race would be an ethnic struggle.
Only former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Aminu Tambuwal, Nasir El-Rufai, and Kano Emir Mohammed Sanusi, he claimed, could obtain the opposition’s votes.
He said that elections are a game of numbers and that, as a Democrat, he has no problem with robust competition in the democratic process.
Momodu remarked on 𝕏 that any efforts to make Nigeria a one-party state should be thwarted.
With Atiku, Kwankwaso, Tambuwal, El-Rufai, and even Emir Sanusi (should he want to move from monarchy to politics), the opposition can only win votes from the other side in the 2027 presidential election, he said.
As long as they are prepared for a primary, the Southern candidates shouldn’t be eliminated either, as the main opposition organizations can only confirm their popularity through contests or consensus.
“Everything must be done to deter monarchical or one-party governments.”
Momodu also called on opposition groups that want to run against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election to band together and use what he called the “ethnic and religious cards.”
He said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has further solidified its hold after a recent wave of PDP governors, including Peter Mbah of Enugu and Douye Diri of Bayelsa, defected.
According to him, Nigeria is on the verge of becoming a one-party state as the APC currently controls both the legislative and executive branches.
