Eric Chelle, head coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, has defended his choice to start Ademola Lookman in the team’s recent World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Rwanda, stating that the Atalanta winger is still essential to the Super Eagles’ strategy despite playing little for the club.
The selection of Ademola Lookman caused several fans and commentators to wonder why a player who had not played in any competitive games this season was thrust into crucial international matches.
According to reports, the 27-year-old attacker had a difficult summer after Atalanta thwarted his planned transfer to Inter Milan for €40 million.
He missed preseason training and was eventually sanctioned by the club as a result of the consequences, which left him disappointed. Under new coach Ivan Juric, his condition deteriorated and he was sidelined for weeks.
While applauding Lookman’s professionalism and dedication throughout the international window, Chelle remained steadfast in his decision.
