Despite the payment of more than ₦50 million in ransom, 38 abducted villagers were brutally murdered by bandits, plunging the residents of Banga village in Zamfara State’s Kaura Namoda Local Government Area into sadness.
Mannir Haidara Kaura, the Chairman of Kaura-Namoda LGA, confirmed the tragedy on Monday, claiming that 56 residents were first taken hostage during the operation.
After being held captive for weeks, just eighteen victims were liberated, Kaura told Channels Television.
“As the Chairman of the local government, I received information that 56 people were kidnapped by the bandits and only 18 of them came back,” he stated.
“The remaining eighteen individuals are on medication; we took them to the hospital.” We are also getting ready to visit the relatives of those who died with the state government.
The released persons are currently receiving treatment, and plans are in place to comfort grieving relatives, he said.
Ibrahim Banga, a local resident, had told Channels Television that the bandits had broken into the area months prior and carried away hundreds of people.

According to Banga, “they demanded ₦1 million per hostage.”
“To ensure their release, the community raised and delivered over ₦50 million after a few weeks.”
Remarkably, the abductors only freed eighteen individuals; the others were apparently killed one by one while in custody.
“When they returned, the rescued victims described how the bandits had killed the other 35 kidnappees,” he continued.
The locals are now urging the federal government and the state of Zamfara to send troops to the region in order to bring about calm, allow the return of displaced people, and free any prisoners that may still be there.
In a different operation, Nigerian Army soldiers, aided by hybrid forces and DSS intelligence, killed at least 45 bandits in Iburu village, Shiroro LGA, Niger State.
The operation was conducted Friday night in response to intelligence information that terrorists on motorbikes were moving forward to assault many neighborhoods, according to security sources.
“A fierce gunfight broke out after the DSS alerted soldiers on standby,” one insider revealed.
The battle reportedly wrecked dozens of motorcycles and left over 40 bandit dead, according to the villagers.
But there were also losses within the soldiers. Four other hybrid force members are in a public hospital being treated for severe bullet wounds, and two members were murdered.
As of this writing, no official announcement regarding the Shiroro operation has been issued by the military authorities.
