On Tuesday, the Ebonyi State Security Council expressed concern about the overcrowding of Correctional Service Centres across the state.
As a result, it instructed Chief Cletus Ofoke, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, to work with the state Comptroller of the Correctional Centre to obtain a complete list of inmates awaiting trial in order to decongest the correctional service centers.
This was stated by the state Attorney General, Ofoke, during a press conference following the state Security Council meeting at the new government House in Centennial City, Abakaliki, the state capital.
“The security council has noted with dismay the congestion nature of the Correctional Service Centres in Ebonyi state,” he said, “and council directed that the Attorney General and CP should liaise with the Comptroller of Corrections to obtain the full lists of inmates awaiting trials with a view to decongesting the correctional service centres in the state by either releasing them based on opinions from the Ministry of Justice or by granting bail by the court.”
Following the alleged torture and death of a crime suspect, Nnaogo Anyim, in Akaeze, Ivo local government area of the state, the council directed the state Commissioner of Police, Garba Aliyu, and the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Cletus Ofoke, to ensure that all those arrested in connection with the mayhem were made to face the law.
“Only two days ago, the Council was briefed on the carnage in Akaeze, Ivo local government area of Ebonyi state. The state Commissioner of Police and my humble self, the Attorney General, have been directed by the council to ensure that those arrested face the law.
“The Council directed that the outcome of the prosecution of the perpetrators of the heinous act be briefed on a regular basis.
“However, Council praised Ebubeagu Security Outfit for their efforts in the state to secure the environment, protect property, and save lives.”

“However, the council warned that personnel should always perform their duties in accordance with the rules of engagement. “The CP and other security agencies have been directed to be on the lookout for Ebubeagu personnel who may want to break the rules of engagement,” he said.
