In response to a protest against the increasing number of kidnappings in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, the Edo State Government has taken action to guarantee the release of legitimate Ambrose Alli University (AAU) students who were detained in the Ubiaja Correctional Center.
52 people were detained and arrested in relation to the disturbance that took place at a demonstration last week, including the students. Concerns over frequent kidnappings and the recent death of a local youth served as the impetus for the demonstration.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, has been assigned by Governor Monday Okpebholo to supervise the release procedure and guarantee that only legitimate AAU students are released.
Speaking to reporters at the Ubiaja Correctional Center, Dr. Iyamu gave the public the assurance that the real students will be released right away after all required procedures were completed.
Dr. Iyamu stated, “The Comrade Association, a group primarily made up of former students, was the catalyst for last week’s violent protest in Ekpoma.” This group frequently takes advantage of any chance to stir things up.
“There is a lot of misinformation, especially on social media,” he added. The Student Union Government must give the necessary permission for a protest to take place. Students were not present, and the school is not in session. Such activities are incited by former students who are coopted by the Comrade Association. Regarding any protest, there was no formal correspondence with security.
The Commissioner confirmed that the demonstrators had stolen food supplies, including Indomie noodles, and vandalized the traditional ruler’s house. He regarded this as an unusual behavior that did not reflect the principles of the student body.
According to him, Governor Okpebholo has stated unequivocally that any legal AAU student should be freed from detention and permitted to return home.
Comrade Asefon Sunday, the President’s Senior Special Assistant for Student Engagement, stated that the pupils will be released shortly.
“We are happy to report that 38 Ambrose Alli University (AAU) students who were detained in connection with the recent protest in Ekpoma will be released shortly,” he stated.
“His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo, the Executive Governor of Edo State; Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Honourable Minister of Education; SUG President Ambrose Ali, the workerholic Commissioner for Education in Edo State; and the steadfast efforts of the comrade community are responsible for this positive development.
“We commend all parties involved for their roles in ensuring a peaceful resolution of the matter, and we appreciate their commitment to dialogue, due process, and the welfare of students.”
“We are grateful to His Excellency for ensuring that our fellow students are released,” said Osadebamwen Ehizojie, President of the AAU Student Union Government (SUG), praising the Governor’s action. It is crucial to remember that hoodlums took over the protest; AAU students did not start it.
