There was drama and tension in the wee hours of Sunday following Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki’s decision to storm the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Benin City.

He was however promptly walked out of the premises by the police led by DIG Frank Mba.

The governor, accompanied by his security aides, was reported to have stormed the
INEC office which is the main collation centre for the ongoing governorship election at about 3.00am and made straight to the office of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Anugbum Onuoha, intent on having an unscheduled meeting but about 30 minutes later, he was forced out of the office by the police.

It was gathered that Obaseki had entered the INEC premises unannounced to protest some perceived anomalies in the collation of results of some local government areas including those in his Oredo LGA.

During the commotion that ensued, members of the All Progressives Congress led by Monday Okpebholo’s running mate, Dennis Idahosa, led protesters to demand the exit of Obaseki from the INEC premises.

Idahosa who was heard shouting on top of his voice from outside the gate, demanded alongside others for the exit of the governor as he stated that he had no business being there.

“Obaseki must come out. He is not supposed to be here. He is not an INEC staff. Nigeria Police should not compromise,” Idahosa was heard screaming.

After a hot exchange, a combined team of policemen led by DIG Mba and soldiers entered the premises and by 4:10 am, and escorted the governor and his team out of the premises.

Minutes before Obaseki was led outside by Mba, the APC National Secretary, Surajudeen Basiru, addressed journalists and said the governor had no reason to be in the INEC premises.

“He is not a candidate. He has no reason to be here”, Bashiru said, describing the governor’s action as abuse of office.
