According to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, is not guilty of the ₦110 billion fraud charges until he is proven guilty in court.
Recall that Bello is charged with 16 counts of criminal breach of trust involving ₦110.4 billion, along with two Kogi State government officials, Abdulsalami Hudu and Umar Oricha.
Wilson Uwuajeren, the EFCC Director of Public Affairs, said that Yahaya Bello’s trial was still ongoing and that the court, not the anti-graft organization, was solely responsible for determining his guilt or innocence during an interview on the Arise News breakfast program, “The Morning Show.”
According to Uwuajeren, criminal prosecution in Nigeria is time-consuming due to the need to present witnesses and evidence in court.
Additionally, the EFCC representative disassociated the Commission from political matters, emphasizing that Yahaya Bello’s standing or treatment inside his political party had no influence on the organization.
He claims that the EFCC is committed to meticulously pursuing the case in court and has no interest in party politics.
The Commission is dedicated to guaranteeing justice for both the prosecution and the defense, Uwuajeren emphasized.
“One thing we need to understand is how criminal prosecution works in Nigeria,” he stated. Before you can prove some of these points in court, it takes some time. The trial is still going on in court as I speak to you.
“We have provided proof and are presenting witnesses. The matter will be decided by the court, not by the commission. All we have to do is follow the prosecution throughout the court proceedings and make sure that, in the end, both the prosecution and the defense receive justice.
Yahaya Bello is now on trial, but according to the Constitution, a person facing trial is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Therefore, everything that is going on with him within his party is just party business. It has nothing to do with the charges we have brought before the court or the EFCC.
