In response to the arrest of former Sokoto State governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, prominent Northern Nigerian voices have started to express their opinions, characterizing the event as potentially having significant political ramifications.
While some leaders in the north claim the arrest raises questions about political witch-hunting, others maintain that the law must be applied regardless of status.
You may remember that Aminu Tambuwal was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday in order to question him about alleged illegal cash withdrawals totaling ₦189 billion.
Tambuwal, a two-term governor of Sokoto State and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, was arrested and questioned by detectives when he arrived at the EFCC offices in Abuja at approximately 11 a.m. on Monday.
He is accused by investigators of making large cash withdrawals while serving as governor, in violation of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The arrest has drawn criticism from a number of people and organizations. It is politically motivated, according to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate for the Labour Party, criticized the arrest, arguing that Nigeria’s fight against corruption must be transparent and equitable. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar accused the Tinubu administration of employing the EFCC to harass and intimidate the opposition. Criticizing the action as a partisan ploy that erodes public confidence was the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA).
But according to the EFCC, it has a nonpartisan mission and has performed its tasks with caution and objectivity. It emphasized that the law is working its way, whether the accused belong to the opposition or the ruling party.

In an exclusive interview, Northern activist and pundit Mahdi Shehu accused the anti-graft agency of political prejudice and characterized the arrest of former Sokoto State governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as proof that the EFCC was dancing nude.
“If it isn’t political, why arrest him now when the EFCC is protecting over 43% of National Assembly members facing fraud charges, Godswill Akpabio, Bello Matawalle, Aliyu Wamakko, and some serving ministers who are facing criminal trials?”
He claimed that the agency protects APC members and those aspiring to join it, but only targets politicians from other parties.
Shehu brought up a number of well-known corruption cases in which the EFCC was accused of turning a blind eye.
He referenced the findings of the Senate Public Accounts Committee, which showed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) was unable to account for ₦210 trillion since 2017.
The EFCC feigned to enter Siesta in this instance since NNPCL is a prohibited region. According to Shehu, the president is always the top petroleum minister.
Along with the missing $7 billion (₦10.4 trillion) intended for turnaround maintenance of refineries in Kaduna, Warri, and Port Harcourt, he also brought up payments of “fraudulent millions per month” to Central Bank of Nigeria consultants.
“Because those involved have powerful backers in the kitchen, the EFCC put cotton wool in both ears,” he claimed.
When Bayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, recently displayed a multibillion-naira home on the internet, Shehu asked why the EFCC had not looked into the matter.
He was barely making ends meet before Tinubu appointed him. What is now known as Government House No. 2 was constructed by him. He said, “But the EFCC will never have the guts, liver, courage, or audacity to touch him.”
In addition to accusing the EFCC of operating a convenient system where certain Nigerians are more Nigerian than others, he warned that the day will soon come when the hunter will become the prey.
A former candidate for the Kano House of Assembly, Adnan Mukhtar Tudunwada, also called Tambuwal’s EFCC detention “very unfortunate” and “purely political” in an interview.
He charged that the anti-graft agency had given up on impartiality and equity in its battle against corruption.
Opposition individuals are hounded and intimidated, he said, while “many members of the APC also face corruption allegations but are never invited for questioning.”
In addition to saying that the EFCC’s efforts to combat corruption are selective and devoid of openness and integrity, Adnan thinks the action is related to Tambuwal’s recent criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
In the meantime, public affairs expert Rabiu Musa stated that individuals should be truthful and concentrate on the alleged offense when it comes to violating the law, regardless of whether it is political.
