Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president, has sharply criticized Nasir El-Rufai, the former minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), calling him a someone who has a chronic predisposition to deceive and a lack of loyalty.
Obasanjo wrote about his experience working with El-Rufai, whom he nominated as Minister during his government, in his autobiography, My Watch (Vol. 2). Obasanjo said El-Rufai lacked the character demanded of a public servant, despite praising his brilliance and ability to produce outcomes.
Nasir has a nearly obsessive tendency to destroy people’s reputations. He boldly lied against me, his coworkers, and even his own relatives,” Obasanjo wrote.

The former president described how El-Rufai frequently violated trust and misrepresented the truth in order to further his own agenda, even though he had the backing and authority of his administration.
El-Rufai’s reported acts against his own family members, including a half-brother and a well-respected uncle, were denounced by Obasanjo, who called the behavior extremely concerning and indicative of a lack of moral foundation.
Despite his talent, he requires careful supervision. He has a mix of psychological and upbringing problems that I refer to as the “small man syndrome,” Obasanjo said.
Obasanjo acknowledged that El-Rufai played a significant role in carrying out important programs during his presidency, despite the harsh criticism, and he said he could still serve the nation, but only under close supervision.
“He delivered what I thought he could. However, he said, “his character flaws make him a liability in unsupervised roles.”
In closing, Obasanjo voiced concern about the factors that might have influenced El-Rufai’s disposition, pointing out that his early lack of parental direction might have had a role in his actions.
